The article describes how Rooney \u201cwas granted court protection from stepson Chris Aber and his stepdaughter Christina Aber, after he filed a case against them charging verbal, emotional and financial abuse, and for denying him such basic necessities as food and medicine&#8230;. The court documents say that both Chris and Christina Aber have been keeping Rooney as \u2018effectively a prisoner in his own home\u2019 through the use of threats, intimidation and harassment. \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Unfortunately stories like this are all too common.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncea.aoa.gov\/ncearoot\/main_site\/pdf\/publication\/FinalStatistics050331.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">A report released by the National Center on Elder Abuse<\/a> mentions that \u201cbetween 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection.\u201d Most cases of elder abuse aren\u2019t as severe that described by Rooney.\u00a0 In fact, according to the ABC article, \u201cmore often than not, elder abuse has to do with unintentional neglect from family members who are ignorant of the proper ways to care for an aging individual.\u201d And perhaps even more prevalent among the elderly is self-neglect, \u201cwhich occurs when the elderly fail to follow medical advice or otherwise care of themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Luckily, there are steps that concerned family members can take to help prevent their loved one from falling into mistreatment, neglect or abuse.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ncea.acl.gov\/faq\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The National Center on Elder Abuse<\/a> shares some simple steps that can be taken to reduce the risk:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Be aware of <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/helpguide.org\/mental\/elder_abuse_physical_emotional_sexual_neglect.htm#signs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>the warning signs<\/strong><\/a> of abuse.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Check in on your loved one at regular intervals<\/strong>; know his or her medicines, routines and caretakers.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Listen to your loved one<\/strong> and investigate any strange stories or complaints.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Keep a wary eye on the mail<\/strong>\u2014many cases of financial abuse take place through mail order scams.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">* If <\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">you are the caretaker of your loved one,<strong> don\u2019t be afraid to ask for help<\/strong>. Taking care of <em>yourself<\/em> is a big part of caring for your elderly loved one.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As helpful as these tips may be, there is <em>much, much more<\/em> that seniors can do to prevent elder abuse before it even begins:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Take care of your health<\/strong> by scheduling regular visits to the doctor and taking prescription medication with absolute regularity.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Stay active in your community<\/strong>, keep close relationships with family members.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong>* Don\u2019t be afraid to use your voice<\/strong>\u2014talk to your loved ones about your plans and wishes for the future and about your concerns in the present.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">* And perhaps most important of all\u2014<strong>Take steps to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estatetrustlawyer.com\/estate-planning.html\" target=\"_blank\">plan for your future<\/a><\/strong>, including:<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> &#8211; Address your health care concerns by executing a health care directive;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> &#8211; Secure your financial future by creating a power of attorney naming the person or people you trust as your financial agent;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> &#8211; Have a will or trust drawn up to avoid confusion within the family later on;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> &#8211; Consider creating a nomination of conservator in the event that you are ever unable to care for yourself.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">And remember that part of planning for your future is seeking advice from a trusted advisor before signing any documents; as well as sharing your plans with your loved ones.\u00a0 If you trust your family, don\u2019t keep them in the dark.
